2007 CGC Open (Country Club Tasmania / Barnbougle)

This years CGC Open was held in Tasmania at the Country Club Tasmania and Barnbougle Dunes golf courses over three days during the Melbourne Cup long weekend. The first and last days were held at the Country Club while the second day was contested at the challenging Barnbougle Dunes layout in blustery conditions. Once again the management and staff of both venues were very accommodating and made sure that the competition was held in good spirit and run professionally. Rumour had it, that the place to be after the cocktail night was with the Osijek Boys ..... we I can assure you that Myth to be confirmed with the boys showing their hospitality up until a few hours before the start of the first days play. Well done guys you are living up to the true spirit of the event.

Interstate Guests
This year we were lucky enough to have 6 interstate guests attend our tournament (4 Sydney, 2 Canberra) from the committee and members of the CGC Melbourne we would like to thank you for your company and we extend a welcome to return again next year. To Fred, Tony, Joe and Darko ... it was a pleasure lads however taking 19 and 18 respectively on a Par 3 and 4 at Barnbougle will take some beating next year. To Rade and Andrija, gentlemen I'm sure we will meet again at the AusCro 2008 in Gisborne.

Day One
The first day was a fairly predictable affair with Joe Franjic, Joe Jerkic well in contention with the likes of Harry Dragovic, Steve Kerovec, Ivan Istuk, Mate Zovak and Miro Franjic all hot on their heels. The one notable absentee from the leaders group was our 2006 Champion Marijan Peric (unfortunately things weren't going to improve for our Royal Pines champion). The boys and girls were all resplendantly decked out in their 2007 CGC polo tops, many thanks to Ante and Lou for all their hard work in ensuring that the tops arrived on time and as expected. Interstingly Bozo Zanko was copping heaps regarding his dismal effort on the first day, but the tables were going to turn within 24 hours.

Day Two
This could have been a logistical nightmare as we had two buses ready to ferry all the players to Barnbougle Dunes, fortunately all went according to plan largely due to the excellent support of all our members who ensured that they were all present at the apponted time and place, thank you to one and all. The course itself proved to bee too much to handle for 90% of our members with a moderate breeze springing up in the morning and a grueling 6 hours out on the course. The general consensus was that although the course was difficult it was a day that would not quickly be forgotten. Each hole proved to be vastly different from another and on more than one occassion members were seen to stand on the tee with shaking knees and fidgety hands. The leaders after day two were Joe Franjic, Miro Franjic, Ivan Istuk and Zvonko Cvitkovic. The day was capped of nicely with a rousing bus trip home and along with the singing and frequent toilet breaks for both the men and the women!!!!!

Day Three
The deciding day say the majority of the field undertake a shotgun start with the leading three groups and the NAGA group starting after the group had hit off. It was evident that Joe Franjic would not have a better opportunity to take the green jacket given his form and the friendly group he had drawn. There were to be a number of bolters on the final day but none were good enough to catch the 16 year old champion. One of the highlights away from the leading groups was the contest between the President and the Secretary, after 9 holes our president was on a hot round shooting 43 on the front, our secretary was having the opposite with a shocking 62 after 9 holes. It was at tis point that our president asked the secretary to pull his finger out as he was embarassing to watch so our secretary got down on his knees and said a short prayer to God to give him strength. The result was stunning with our Secretary shooting 46 on the back 9 and our presidnet falling apart to shoot 57. This goe to show that there really is a god or as we would say Ima Boga!! Back to the important stuff the NAGA award after being hotly contested all day between Henry Kudric, Tony Vujic, Denis Radic and Zlatko Furdi was eventually won by Zlatko Furdi. But back to the man (or should I say lad) of the moment. From Day 1 he led the field with an opening score of 67 and he was never seriously challenged from then on, eventually winning the Group comp and runner up on countback in the doubles comp.
