Game 15- Growling Frog - December 4th 2011
Here we are approaching Christmas yet again, concluding the CGC fixture at the Growling Frog Golf Course, which had us all shivering and howling in the arctic winds. Anyone prepared to bet on a white Christmas? Sadly there was a lot of road kill on the way to the course, a timely reminder to take extra care at dusk and dawn over the Christmas break.
Once again Ivan Jacmenovic blitzed the field with an unbelievably good score, taking triple honours with off-the-stick, nett win, and nearest to pin on the money hole. Here is a man with the Midas touch. His group mates didn’t miss out completely though, with Frank Ivkovic hitting the longest drive on hole 15, and then there was Mick Kuruc nabbing nearest to pin, proving that there was at least some hot air in all that chilly wind.
Hats off to Pero Kelava, the cuddler, who managed not one, but two nearest to pin mentions for the day. That’s two holes where he didn’t have to think about hitting |

out of one of the many sand dunes that some might call bunkers around the greens.
All the drama wasn’t on the course though. The fierce wind had our members feeling a little on edge, but none more so than Harry who spectacularly spat the Damir over the fish incident, as he stomped out of the Clubhouse, proving that not all Dalmatians are partial to fish. Go figure!
We’ve had some embarrassing instances of dementia setting in for a few of our older members this year, with a growing incidence of members struggling to record, I mean remember all of their shots. With Christmas around the corner, it’s a good time to hint to our loved ones, that a counter be added to the Christmas stocking this year since the memory isn’t what it used to be.
I’d like to wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas and summer break.
That's all from me.

Game 14- Bacchus Marsh - November 13th 2011
|
We were at the business end of CGC’s calendar, with Matchplay, and Peter Milkovic Medal in contention at Bacchus Marsh Golf Club on a very pleasant and mild day.
Zvonko was appropriately prepared for Matchplay hitting the hay at 2.00am the night before , and stumbling onto the course for his encounter with Mark Radic who has had a cracker of a year. This day was no exception, as he forged a blistering win over Zvonko, who succumbed by the 15th hole. When I say blistering, I mean just that. Mark matched Zvonko for stroke most of the way, with blistered feet to boot, after putting on brand new golf shoes. That’s what you might call a handicap. Zvonko had Anita in his group encouraging him, and that’s what HE might call a handicap. Jules caps off a successful year with Peter Milkovic Medal to add to his efforts.
Vinnie Pavlovic also had a late night, and while he may have had an ordinary start to the day, he kept the bogey-man at bay on the back nine, to par his way to a double–titled win, nabbing him off-the-stick, as well as nett win of the day. He also managed to squeeze into entry to medal of medallists at the next game. That’s what you might call a PAR-ticularly good day on the course.

Presidents have been in the news a lot lately. Blink, and you would have missed Obama’s lightning visit to Australia. He learnt a bit of Aussie slang, and we learnt that Darwin is about to become a hotter place than ever. The President’s Cup of the golf world has been fought and won, and Bela Lugosi stepped down from his platform shoes, and Italian politics, leaving him more time for Bunga Bunga parties. He may have left the finances in an ugly mess, but he will be remembered for assembling the best–looking cabinet in Europe.
At CGC the President and the committee are in the news as well, as we approach our AGM. Please attend our Christmas Party/AGM on the 20th, and have a say in where CGC is headed next year, and if you can, put your hand up to help out in 2012. Congratulations to all of the day's winners, and best of luck to those in Medal of Medallists final on the 4th.

CGC Jacman Open 2011
It's not all about golf folks, so say all of us who attended the beautiful Hamilton Island hospitality machine. Only one thing fell flat, and that was the effect of Queensland water on the girls' hair. See CGC Open for official results.
The magnificent golf course was designed by Peter Thompson, and modified on Day 1 by Hilmo, who took it upon himself to play Wacky Races Golf, for the benefit of his roomy in the group behind. Word has it, it took two men to put some of those boulders back in their rightful place. Must have had spinach with his Scotch for breakfast at Kirribilli House.
Day 1 of the CGC Jacman Cup proved to be hot, hot, hot, and the weather was pretty warm too. Ivan Jacmenovic, the namesake of the tournament didn't disappoint, going home with the Winner's medal for the day to initiate proceedings. It couldn't have been scripted better, but his joy was short-lived with Steven Jerkic taking over from there to romp it home with the 2011 back-to-back title. Special mention goes to best newcomer of the year, Mason Kuruc who not only impressed with the winning nett score on Day 3, but also with his genial manner, which I've been assured by Anica has come from his mother. Well done.
There were injuries too, but not on the golf course. The sudden holiday vibe had adverse affects on some of our members, with Tony Hecca from Sydney rolling his ankle adjusting to thongs so early in the year, putting an end to his CGC Open dreams for 2011, and Kathy sustained a nasty whip-lash condition showing the young'ns how to shake it on the dance-floor at the Halloween Party. Easy does it next time.
Then there were the close encounters of the Cockatoo kind. If they weren't stealing undies from balconies and dropping them on unsuspecting pedestrians, they were making themselves at home in front of the TV, getting ideas from 'Windex' ads, no doubt. Word has it, there were 15 cockatoos making their marks all over one suite.
The picturesque golf course was a challenge for all but the best of them, and didn't we all sadly leave a little bit of ourselves behind when we left......some more than others. I'm talking about golf balls, dozens and dozens of them. Congratulations to those who managed to find a few lost balls to replenish their dwindling stocks.
Congratulations to all of our winners.
Game 12 - Waterford Valley - September 18th
After more than a 12 month absence the CGC finally returned to Waterford Valley, I must say that the course and conditions were pristine however the service and food or should I say lack of food left a lot to be desired. I think we will be going back to having a BBQ in the future.
As for the golf ...... The semi final of the matchplay was held with Mark Radic outlasting Frank Bajer to make it to the final against Zvonko Cvitkovic. For once Frank had the flip side of the coin finding it difficult to peg back a 9 shot advantage. In the other semi we are not sure whether Anita being the good wife and wanting to keep the peace at home actually let Zvonko win or whether the many threats by Zvonko actually made a difference. So much for happy wife happy life!! Good luck to both gentlemen in the final which will be played at Bacchus Marsh on the 13th of November.
Following in the tradition of our young guns stealing the limelight, young Mason Kuruc broken through for his maiden victory with a score of 67 Nett. Rumour has it that Mason is giving Mick lessons for this years trip away. Runner up this week was the ever consistant Drago Hrastov who was one shot back with a Nett score of 68.
Special mention to Nick Kalamar (son of one of our former members Rob Kalmar) and a member of the Melbourne Heart senior squad who attended the day as a guest of Ivan Istuk. Thank you to Nick and the Heart for the generous prizes that went towards our raffle prizes for the day.

Game 11 - Gisborne - August 28th
Well in racing terms the track was HEAVY and boy did the mudlarks come out to play. First up I must apologise to our members for having to put up with what can only be described as a course in a very sorry state. Nevetheless, the matchplay went ahead and I must say that the state of the course probably had a lot to do with the matchplay results. Congratulations to Zvonko Citkovic, Anita Cvitkovic, Frank Bajer and Mark Radic on making it through to the semi finals at Waterford Valley. In what can be described as a battle of the spouses Zvonko will play his wife Anita in one semi and Mark Radic v Frank Bajer in the other. Now we are curious to see whether martital bliss will take precedence over golfing glory for Zvonko, either way Zvonko you're on a hiding to nothing regardless of the result. Good luck to all four players.
As for the daily winner .... well what can be said! Furdi took the opportunity to have his annual blinder and win the day. However I hear that the Strathie boys were hoping that he'd keep it in the bag and bring this game along for the end of year challenge against the Bright Boys.

Game 10 - Patterson River - August 7th
London wasn't the only place which was on fire this week, with Jules Cheung blazing a trail down the Course at Patterson River, and an impressive 61 nett for his efforts. This might well be a coincidence if not for the stellar year he's been having to date. This begs the question, what is the secret of his success? In a post match interview, it was revealed by his group mates, that there is indeed a routine Jules strictly adheres to. Sunday morning began like many others with the appearance of a bottle of Laphroaig and it was only a matter of time before the group became the McHappy Boys Clan of Patterson River, aided by the enthusiastic golf commentary of McVujic who it is said, could be heard from miles away lauding Jules' winning form and his own likely spot for second. Alas Iva Samardzija, with 66 took that mantle, leaving McVujic speechless for the first time all day. Go figure!
With Harley Cindric's impressive 75 off-the-stick, this makes Harley and Jules our favourites for the Jacman Cup in Hamilton Island later this year. As neither belongs to a regional team, this also makes them guns for hire in next month's Pokrajinski Kup at Tullamarine. CGC committee could raise some funds auctioning them off to the highest bidders, the way they are playing.
Alojz Hojnik continues to impress with his 3rd nearest to pin in as many games, while Timi Zivolic made his very occasional presence felt with nearest to pin, and longest drive mentions for the day.
Thanks to everyone who hung around post-game, both for the company, and for the excellent impressions of the bartender asking a bunch of unruly middle-aged people to tone it down, stop swearing and 'take that cap off indoors'. That's kind of like asking a kid with ADHD to sit still. Impossible!

Game 9 - Melton Valley - July 17th
In News of the CGC World, we have been conducting our very own phone hacking inquiry. First off we thought we might investigate our President for some scandalous revelations, some bootlegging, some hidden salmonella stories maybe, but all that Tony was revealing was his hole-in-one details to anyone and everyone who'd listen. Straight from the not-so-secret tapes..... "Well off the club and in the air it looked like a great shot, but after pitching on the green it soon disappeared down the slope. The boys said 'that will be close', which at that stage I said that it probably has gone just off the green knowing my luck. As we approached, there was no sign of the ball which meant I started swearing straight away of course........ eventually I had a look in the cup and there it was, and that's when I started screaming like I was being raped by 10 fat Bosnian blokes!" Well said Tony.
In other news Frank Bajer scored well at 41, but missed out on countback - yet again. All was not lost though, as this quiet achiever scored well at Melton last time, and so takes home the Stableford trophy for 2011. Well done to Frank and particularly to Ange Hrastov, our winner of the day.
On a lighter note, Archie thought he'd have a pre-Gisborne match-play rehearsal with Anita to assert his confidence, and dent hers, not figuring that he was dealing with Madam (tongue) Lash, and so learnt the very valuable lesson, that golf is not all about hitting a little white ball till it goes in the hole. The psychological component plays a pretty big part, no? Word has it that Archie's put in an order for ear plugs and blinkers for the big game.

MUD. What is it good for? Absolutely nothin'! No doubt about it, the entire course was a water hazard. Puddles on the fairways, and puddles in the bunkers. There was water, water, everywhere driving everyone bonkers.
There's no doubt that the course was in very ordinary condition to begin with, but it was in extraordinary condition once CGC was done with it. Extraordinarily BAD, that is! It was disappointing to see so many fresh divots left unrepaired by our club members. It takes just a few seconds to do the right thing boys. Try not to think of it as housework.
All that water even appeared to make money grow. At least that's what Drago Hrastov thought when he approached the 7th hole markers. As he bent down to tee up, he noticed gold coins scattered about. 'Is this the money hole?' he asked laughing. Just so happens it was, but alas, he was completely put off by his good fortune, and clever wit, that he did not manage to get close to the pin. That honour went to Mate Batinovic.
The winners of the day on a whopping 51 were Tony Frlan and Steven Sistov who clearly didn't mind swingin' in the rain. Congratulations boys. Runner up honours, on countback, go to the dynamic duo of Johnny Brkljacic and Milan Sucic with an impressive 47.

Game 6 - The Dunes-May 1st
The navman got a good workout as we hiked to The Dunes, but what a great day was had by all in perfect golfing conditions, with no wind, no actual rain, and friendly course staff to enhance the day.
The theme of the day appeared to be KNOWLEDGE and WISDOM. They say that 'Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad". Just ask Joey Franjic. He attended as a representative of Melbourne Knights, along with his Captain Ben Surrey. This former green-jacket winner swings it with the best of them so we all know that he has golf knowledge, but does he have wisdom? Apparently not. When his ball landed in long grass, and Ange Cimera suggested he declare it unplayable, Joey thought better of it and took a swing 'as it lies', again, and again, and again, and again, and so it goes, that not only does he not listen to his wise elders, it takes up to 9 misses to hit home that a drop in time saves 9. That was a painful 16 shots on the 8th hole for this 4 handicapper. But the question is, has he learnt anything from the experience?
On another part of the Course his dad was applying some wisdom of his own, when group-mate Steve Djopa came down with sore-back syndrome half way through the game. Just as Dr Panadol was kicking in, Frankie offered up his chiropractic services, and while he meant well, (we think) he managed to completely stuff up Steve's game. I'm not sure who was the wise guy here. This begs the question.... would you let a builder crack your back? We welcome another new member to CGC. Matthew Valcek has been attending for a while with his dad, so he must like something about you guys. Please make him welcome. We know he's another young gun to look out for, as he already has an enviable collection of CGC glasses proving that he can hit the ball far and aim it in the right direction as well.
We congratulate our winners of the day. Committee duties have not hampered the skill of Runner-up Peter Milkovic Junior scoring 63, just behind our Nett Winner of the day, Milan Sucic, also on 63. Special mention must go to Frank Jugovic who parred the course 'off-the-stick' with a score of 72. Well done. That's what might be referred to as 'Wisdom applied to Knowledge = a perfect score.

Game 5 - Bacchus Marsh- April 10th
What a difference a 2-tee start makes. Early start, early finish, and an early lunch for all. The only thing missing from the entire experience was a ride-on mower for the long grass in the rough. Life wasn’t meant to be easy!
Life. Be in it. Walking’s good for you, especially when you’re in the Individual Masters knockout competition, so say Drago Hrastov, Anita, Steve Tomic and Mick Kuruc who waited, waited, waited for their opponents to show up for a show-down, but no-go, so they get a breezy walk-through to the next round. Others had to work for the honour. It was hard going at the start for Frank Bajer Sr who scored a massive 10, with 5 of those strokes from the bunker of the first hole. Before he could say, “it’s all over now”, he went on to win the round. Surprised? So was Frank. Vinnie Pavlovic was down 3 holes after 12, and managed to par his way to a win. Can we assume that his fairway shots found the green before his pitching wedge got involved? I think we can. It goes to show that a game can turn around at any moment. Sometimes it all hinges on the last hole as it did with Josip (abacus) Jurgec and Steve Djopa. Now Josip’s not one to miscalculate his opponent’s shots, so no-one was more surprised then he, when he congratulated Steve for a win, and Steve congratulated him back for the same. Turns out Steve counted all of his shots, but Josip forgot one. There’s brownie points for honest-Steve, and congratulations to Josip for a win.
Runner-up honours belong to the 3 Ivans at 68. Ivan Jacmenovic and Ivan Matijas missed out on count-back to Ivan Markus. Jacmenovic was on a hat-trick, with off-the-stick award for the day, and even brought the money home, with nearest to pin on the money hole. Not wanting to burst his bubble, but it appears that all silver linings have a cloud, as he contemplates the 25+ shots he must concede to Anita at the next knock-out round. I say they are both feverishly working on their winning strategies right now.
The overall winner of the day, with a smashing nett 60, and easy progression to round 2 of knock-out was Mark Radic. His low-key celebration belied his victory, but I have been assured that he was celebrating on the inside. Congratulations for a well-deserved win, a huge 8 strokes under his nearest rival. That's impressive! Now of course, the pressure’s on Denis, with Mark and Uncle Marko in medal of medallists competition at the end of the year. Come on Denis, you can do it, no pressure!

Game 4 - Melton Valley- March 27th
Is it just me or does anyone else think that Elizabeth Taylor has more chance of bagging husband #9, than CGC has getting a 2-tee start in 2011? What’s going on? We certainly hope that our game at Bacchus Marsh breaks with this new trend. It was the only disappointment of the day, so thanks to all those who finish early, and stick around to the end.
It was a mild day, and an excellent turnout to game 4 at Melton Valley Golf Club, our first stableford game of the year, and what a range of scores to behold, bookended with 3 at 23, and 3 at 43. The big winner, and the big grinner, was Jules Cheung on a whopping 46. He looked pretty pleased with himself, but cautiously held off celebrating until the last player dropped off his card to the day’s captain, just in case. That's what you might call 'tenterhooks' on Hole 19.
What happens when the Captain and Vice Captain both call in absent? Well, anything can happen, like maybe you get 3 runners-up for a start, with Frank Bajer Senior in the company of family in Ange Cimera and Drago Hrastov on 43. As well as that you might get 5 nearest to pins, and 2 money holes. Word has it that Ricky Ponting is available for the Captain’s position next time Joe’s away, but as we all know, that’s no guarantee that things will run smoothly.
We gave away so much cash on the money hole that we had to scrimp on the raffle tickets, after all, paper’s expensive these days. Well to be fair, there were lots of raffle books, only they were all Orange E. When you think about it, everyone’s a winner though. At $10 a ticket, it saves a) money and b) time, and c) most importantly it reduces the likelihood of RSI for the committee members having to separate all the tickets into the bucket. Let’s face it, the odds of winning are still the same. The odds of not winning anything are even better.
The committee weren’t the only ones missing Captain Joe. It seems his son Steven missed him so much, that he forgot how to play golf, and his mate Nick Babic played down in sympathy, or was it that their other group member Anita intimidated them into submission. What happened there?
We have two new members at CGC, so please welcome Mario Tarle, and second generation CGC member Mason Kuruc. We hope that they’ll enjoy their stay, and remember to shout a few beers at Bacchus Marsh. Dad may have to help out there. It was nice to see a familiar face at Melton with Vlado Maurovic taking time out from his holiday in Australia to say hello to CGC, and have a hit and a chat with some old golfing mates.

Game 3 - Gisborne- March 6th
One is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do. That is if you’ve missed out on nett winner of the day by just one stroke. Two can be as bad as one, if you get nearest to pin on hole 2 and hole 12, but miss out on a hat-trick on the money hole for the cash, and end up in the water instead. So it was for Pero Kelava, a bitter-sweet day all the way. We won’t mention the wayward shot that could have made him Killer Kelava and Ma and Pa Rajkovic bereft. He has three mentions on the result table, and just missed out on the big prize (by one), but a solid result nevertheless. The well deserved win for the day goes to Marko Purgaric, who outshone his nephews Mark and Denis, and gives him bragging rights over his young guest/ co-worker for the day. Well done Marko. That’s bound to give him extra golfing cred at work too.
Gisborne shone in a beautiful, lazy 28 degree day. Thanks to everyone for your patience with a 1-tee start, and a bit of waiting around between holes. Well we are a social club, and you can’t say there was no socializing between groups, between holes …..lotta swearing too. If Joe was carrying around his penalty box, we’d have Hamilton Island fully sponsored in about 5 games…damn, those Gisborne bunkers will do that to you.
In other golf news, the raffle bucket’s back, well a replacement anyway, prompting a few disappointed comments. If you want a bucket dressed in customary after-5 wear, someone will have to donate a perfectly cylindrical bucket with a handle. Did anyone hear the Captain mention separate ladies comps for 2011? Relax, it's just a committee in-joke folks.

Game 2 - Patterson River- February 13th In game perfect conditions, Patterson River Golf Course and staff greeted us with welcome arms.Things may have begun a little pear-shaped, with Hilmo being pulled up for wearing black socks, followed by the still sleepy Steven Jerkic following Anita into the 'ladies' (can he please explain this one, and why wasn't he fined by dear ol' dad who was so intent on extracting cash from all and sundry) but it all ended with a great deal of fun for the fifty-six CGC members who ventured out so far, so early in the morning. Our thanks go out to the friendly staff at the Course who could not have been more accommodating. All things said, the day belonged to our president. What a difference a month makes. He's grown a beard, bought a driver, learnt how to use it, and netted 63 for his efforts. Does this mean we can bury his tired 4-iron? Aah there's nothing like the cheesy grin of a man who's won the day, but the real satisfaction was surely in pipping his mates Lou and Ange who came in with a repectable 65 each. Off-the-stick honours belong to our new member Frank Blazevic, who is bound to give our Captain a run for his money, and the rest of us something to punt on, I mean, aspire to.
